In the early 1900s San Francisco living space was at a premium. Recently married William L. Murphy liked to entertain and needed an alternative to the conventional bed that took up most of the floor space in his one room apartment. In 1916 he obtained a patent for what would become the Murphy Bed or Wall Bed. Then the Murphy Wall Bed Company started manufacturing beds in San Francisco. Like William L. Murphy, many people today need flexible and versatile living space.
